With students in Lee County already starting back to school in the year round program the need is already apparent for what some students will require during this coming school year.
Not only are school supplies needed, but food as well.
With over 68% of Lee County students on Free or Reduced Meal programs the need for support is great.
Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County last year took on the Backpack Pals program for our Lee County School System. With support from the community they were able to take on the additional schools and increase distribution during the 2016-2017 school years.
Last year 10,482 bags were sent home on Fridays with approximately 38,898lbs. of food to feed students over the weekends.
With the donations received from the community this amounted to a cost of $2.81 per bag for four meals and two snacks for those students needing the extra care.
Executive Director, Teresa Dew Kelly said, “this community has rallied together to meet the needs after the closing of Communities in Schools. Without the donations from companies such as Pfizer, Pentair, Moen and foundations such as the Mary Tulloch Fund and NC Community Foundation and many others, we couldn’t have done it. That’s why we are so happy to announce the partnership with the Belflex Staffing Network to assure that our needs will be met for the 2017-2018 school year.”
Belflex representative, Ann Hollingsworth the Community Outreach Manager along with local staff reached out to CUOC to offer assistance in meeting this year’s needs. Marketing Manager, Jay Clawson, shared that “BelFlex Staffing Network is driven by a passion for creating success for its employees, clients, and communities—what it calls Succeeding Together. BelFlex provides staffing and flexible workforce solutions to distribution and manufacturing companies in the Midwest and Southeast that value its deep industry knowledge, recruiting expertise, commitment to compliance, and partnering approach to improving productivity. Founded in 1989, BelFlex employs over 5,000 people through its 25 branch offices.” As a company they are committed to helping Lee County not only meet the employment needs but also giving back to the community they are serving.
Community support for back to school supplies like pencils, paper, notebooks, markers, glue, etc. along with items to support the backpacks like pudding cups, fruit cups, juice boxes, pop tarts and lunch items with pop top lids will be collected for the month of August 1-30 at our local Belflex Staffing office located at 115 South Horner Blvd from 8-5pm each day. A final STUFF the TRUCK day will be held on Friday, August 25 at the same location as a drive thru drop off for anyone wishing to make a difference in a kid’s life.
